The “Dog Days of Summer.” Just hearing the phrase might conjure images of lazy afternoons, ice-cold lemonade, and perhaps, a happy pup napping in the shade. But did you know this iconic summer phrase has roots that go far deeper than just hot weather? Traditionally, the “Dog Days” (July 3rd to August 11th) were named after Sirius, the “Dog Star,” the brightest star in the night sky. Ancient civilizations observed that during this period, Sirius rose with the sun, coinciding with the hottest, most humid days of the year. While the astronomical alignment has shifted over millennia, the phrase stuck, becoming synonymous with the peak of summer’s heat.

But for Shubee®, the Dog Days of Summer mean something much more profound: it’s a dedicated time to focus our energy and passion on the well-being of our local canine companions, especially those in need.

Why the “Dog Days” are Significant for Our Cause

While the term once carried connotations of lethargy and even misfortune, we’re reclaiming the “Dog Days” to bring fortune and comfort to the dogs who need it most. For many animal shelters like Furever After Rescue here in Macon, GA, summer can be a particularly challenging time for the following reasons:

  • Increased Intake: Warmer weather sometimes leads to an increase in stray animals or surrendered pets.
  • Strain on Resources: More animals mean more food, more medical care, and more space, all of which stretch limited resources.
  • Public Awareness: It can be harder to cut through the noise of summer vacations and activities to raise awareness for shelter needs.

That’s why our second annual Dog Days of Summer campaign, running from July 3rd to August 15th, is so critical. We’re harnessing the very spirit of summer—community, joy, and a little bit of playful energy—to rally support for Furever After Rescue. As a no-kill, foster-based animal rescue organization, FAP focuses on finding homes for dogs, particularly these coming from local high-kill shelters, bad situations or owner surrenders. Our goal is to donate a total of $500 to help them continue their incredible work rescuing, rehabilitating, and rehoming dogs throughout our community.
