The first 90 days for a new employee is critical to employee retention. Make sure you give your new employee the opportunity to excel. The minute they walk in the door on their first day, they need to know what's expected of them.

Ideally you'll want to provide them with a packet containing all of your policies and procedures, a background on how the company started and where it's headed, a schedule for their first week, and a calendar with set times for meetings to gauge their progression.

It's difficult for an employee to feel a sense of accomplishment about their career if they don't know exactly what's expected of them. Give your quality employee the opportunity to excel by providing them with what they need to do quality work on day one. Now they know what's expected, make sure you provide a career instead of just a job.

Most employees don't see themselves in the exact same position in 5 years. Most want to:

  • Move up the company ladder
  • Make more money

It's imperative that you give them the opportunity to move up or they will soon be shopping for a better job. Show them how they can work their way up to management, or how they can get the pay increase they want. Initiate a discussion about their goals and lay out a game plan in order to reach these goals within your company. The desire for a promotion and better pay is a major reason why many people switch jobs. By giving them the opportunity to advance within your company, they're more likely to stick with you.
